The Reusable Revolution in Sheffield

In the UK we use 7 million disposable coffee cups every day – that’s 2.5 billion every year, with only 1% recycled. And around 100+ million plastic cups are used every year at UK festivals and live events, and most of these are incinerated or sent to landfill.

Throughout Sheffield’s coffee shops, markets and events there will be vast swathes of disposable coffee cups, pint cups and containers. Think about the amount of waste if you were to gather up all of those disposables.

So what’s the solution? Reusables!

The benefits of reusables (thanks to Circular&Co)

  • Single-use coffee cups are soon to be driven out of use, whether through legislation, climate and consumer pressures. This means very soon 95% of the population who are still using single use will need a workable cost effective, hassle free solution

Cost savings

Single use cup cost £0.12, Returnable Cup cost £1.10
Loss rate @ 1%/day and trading 50 weeks per year.
Washing 50 cups per cycle at 10p per cycle

Carbon emission savings

  • For every 1 million reusable event cups in regular use, 1000 tonnes of C02e emissions and 300 tonnes waste could be avoided.

Sheffield Action on Plastic are campaigning for a Reusable Revolution in Sheffield. This will be done with:

  • Reusable cup and container scheme for events
  • Reusable coffee cup scheme for coffee shops

If you run a business who serves food and drink, we need you to show your support for this. Using reusables means you don’t have to buy so many single-use disposables cups and containers and we will highlight your business locally and regionally.

Thanks to Loadhog and Swag Box, we now have reusable pint cups and wine goblets to use at your events and functions.

  • Save money on purchasing disposable cups
  • Save money on waste disposal costs
  • Yonder polling conducted in April found 89 percent of Britons want plastic pint cups banned in a bid to protect the environment
